Mondale Leadership Institute
2012-2013 Series 2013 Keynote Speaker Student-Led Changes Internships Get Involved
The Mondale Leadership Institute opened in 1978, in honor of Vice President Walter Mondale (1977-1981). During his political career, Vice President Mondale fought for fair housing, tax reform, the desegregation of schools, and was an adamant supporter for equal rights. Since its opening, the Mondale Leadership Institute has sought to educate and empower students at Evans-Bossert University to become advocates of political activism and social justice.
Education
The first pillar of the Mondale Leadership Institute, education, has been actualized in a myriad of ways throughout history. Each year the institute hosts the Mondale Leadership Series, a yearlong series of events committed to leadership, the development of multicultural competence, and the exposure to past and present agents of change. One of the notable events each year is the Mondale Keynote Address, which is typically given by a noteworthy political or social figure who has shown a commitment to equality, freedom, education, human rights, and social reform. Past speakers include President Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu, Whitney Houston, Bill Gates, Hank Aaron, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Noam Chomsky, Cesar Chavez, and Corazon Aquino.
Empowerment
Evans-Bossert University believes that just as the education of students on critical political and social issues, so too is the empowerment of those students to become agents of change. Throughout the years, students have made substantial changes to the institution, the local community, and on the national and global stage. Institutional changes have included the creation of a multi-faith center on campus, the offering of non-traditional meal options (Kosher and Halal options), and the recognition of non-Christian holidays.
Institutional Collaboration
In addition to offering its own programming, the Mondale Leadership Institute works to collaborate with a multitude of offices and organizations on campus. These offices include the Political Science Department, Peace Studies Department, Economics Department, Gender and Women's Studies Department, EBU Student Government, College Republicans, and College Democrats.
Today, the Mondale Leadership Institute offers over 400 internships to EBU students annually in 12 different countries.
