Financing Study Abroad [19][20]
Will McAvoy, '80
Students participating in EBU sponsored study abroad programs should expect their experience to cost the same as a semester on-campus. Those costs cover housing, administration, excursions, some food costs, on-site transportation, and other program activities. It is important to not only consider the cost of tuition, room and board, but also the additional costs of travel, personal spending, sightseeing and souvenirs.
Students who receive federal aid or institutional scholarships may apply those resources to the cost of their study abroad experiences. In addition to federal and institutional aid, all students are eligible for the Will McAvoy Study Abroad Grant. The Will McAvoy Study Abroad Scholarship is an endowment fund created by famed EBU alum and ACN news anchor Will McAvoy ('80). Will McAvoy noted that the experiences with EBUS, the Mondale Leadership Institute, and his study abroad experience (Israel, '78) prepared him for his career in international relations and news broadcasting. A longtime supporter and of EBU, Mr. McAvoy wanted to ensure that future EBU students would be allowed the same opportunities he had. Due to his gracious donations, the Will McAvoy Study Abroad Scholarship is available to all students and covers up to 25% of the cost of studying abroad.
In addition to the McAvoy Scholarship, federal, and institutional aid, other forms of financial assistance may be available. Public and private organizations, businesses, and churches often award grants, loans, and fellowships to students traveling abroad. Scholarships may be awarded on the basis of personal attributes (ethnic or religious background, parents' field of employment, place of residence, etc.), academic major, career path, or study abroad destination.
